For last few months I am spending few hours a day learning the way of life from Molana Rumi, the famous Philosopher who his follower are called Soufis or Darvishes. One of the very important subject in Rumi's world and teaching is " Ego and Self". In the Western Psychological sense, "ego" or "self" refers to a certain kind of balance and strength in the mind. Having a strongly developed ego in that sense is essential to our basic wellbeing. We have to have that balance in order to function in the world as harmonious human beings. People with an underdeveloped or misperceived sense of self cannot operate well in the world or be at peace within themselves.

The Rumi's use of the word "self" is different from this concept of balance on mental emotional maturity. "self" is the one who we function in this world which causes all our suffering and reactions. "self" thought is the thinker; there is no thinker apart from the thought itself. The faster we drop the "I" "Self or Ego" the sooner we reach to treasure of presence. Once we get to sense this Presence, we would function more efficient without the presence of "Self, I or Ego". Things happens naturally without any effort.
